The race Neflari comes from was created using ancient magic at the dawn of civilization along with several other races. The exact details are lost to time but what little is known indicates they were created to be companions and slaves. The original creators and much of their knowledge disappeared at some point and their creations were left on their own.

Lifespans are unusually long, averaging around 1300-1400 years with the oldest recorded reached 1822 years. Reproductive maturity is reached around 25-30 years of age. Responsibilities and freedom of adulthood is granted at the age of 50 though mental maturity may vary by a few years. Full physical maturity however does not occur until about 80 years of age at which point they are considered a true adult. This long lifespan has had the side effect of members less commonly mating outside of the tribe due to the fact they will almost always far outlive anyone they may partner with. Recently acquired magic allows some lengthening of an outsider’s lifespan but a difference still remains and does cause problems.

The average stature and build tend to be a little larger than humans though this may vary by bloodline. Wing form is the type designed for soaring and require some form of cliff, roof or other height to get airborne. Some fully matured individuals are capable of taking to the air from the ground though it is difficult.

Mating compatibility is almost universal with humans, feline species and many human-like races such as elves. Other species vary in their compatibility. Genetics are strong with wings and longer lifespan in particular often maintained down through the second generation of breeding with outsiders. The normal range of sexes include males, females and hermaphrodites with a noticeably higher proportion of females and herms than males. Male-herms and shemales are genetic anomalies that can occur but they are extremely rare.

Full sexual consent can be given to adults by the age of 30 though consent at an earlier age may be allowed with parent or guardian approval. In the case of harm resulting from contact the parent or guardian allowing consent can equally be held responsible. Incest is generally accepted and intimacy is very common among siblings in earlier years. Marriage or mating between siblings or other family members is acceptable but uncommon. Unlike with humans, the risk of problems with children born of incest is not observably different from the normal risk in any other mating.

The majority of relationships and marriages are monogamous but polyamory is also common. Many forms of relationships are socially recognized and there are no legal limitations. A particular relationship can be given formal legal recognition if desired with marriage being the most frequent case this is requested.

Government consists of several councils specializing in various areas as well as councils or individuals representing the various communities. These councils are generally responsible for matters of law enforcement, social welfare and judiciary matters. Appeals may be made to other councils or a higher level if desired. Nobility and class exist and played a larger role in the past but are minor considerations now. The tribe does maintain a defensive force including battle mages. It is rarely used in full force, generally only sending small contingents to assist allies or others when necessary. Foreign policies are rather isolationist though often tribe members and some communities assist elsewhere at their own discretion.

Society has a matriarchal tendency due to the low proportion of males compared to females and herms but it is not oppressive towards males. Physical strength, aggressiveness and dominance are not generally considered ideal attributes. Compassion, logic, sincerity and mental fortitude are more highly regarded. Most tribe members will naturally seek harmonious solutions, to the point of it sometimes becoming a liability.

Slavery in certain forms is allowed but only as a consensual agreement and can be challenged or broken by either party. Outside intervention is rare and only occurs in cases where the arrangement is highly abusive or dangerous. Visitors and travelers with slaves are tolerated but overly abusive treatment is not. Anyone wishing to become a long-term resident or citizen must also abide by the consensual rules of slavery and any existing slaves wishing to be free are allowed to leave.
